I don't know whether I would consider PvE to be a form of parallel gaming. If we follow the traditional definition of "parallel play," I wouldn't even consider Minecraft as a type of it, unless you're never interacted with. When you interact with someone, your play becomes group/cooperative. Based on what Kate Gray mentioned, parallel play is often thought of as a way to prepare for later games of cooperation because children are still growing beyond their individualistic nature.

I'm splitting hairs at this point, but I think we can think of "playing in parallel" and "parallel playing" as two distinct concepts. The first is any game where you all have set rules or objectives (i.e. Minecraft) and may interact when your actions align with another's. In contrast, the latter is doing the same activity however, they are distinct from one another with no interaction.

In the simplest sense it is possible to play parallel games in video games can be two people playing Minecraft on the same server, but not interaction with one another (but still sharing the creations of each other). Fakeroot A friend and you could play different video games.
